Sketch & Explore Sessions

Sketch & Explore Sessions - FAQs
I'm sure you have questions so have a look below for answers! If I've missed clarifying something then please contact me.
Who is it for?
  • Anyone 16 years + (under 18’s will need to be accompanied by an adult) who enjoys walking and or sketching.)
  • Anyone who wants to get outside sketching more but would prefer the company of others rather than go on their own.
  • For anyone that wants to enjoy using a sketchbook rather than feeling pressure to produce a perfect drawing.
  • All art abilities – you don’t need to have sketched before.

What will the session involve?
I see this as an informal teaching session where I am sharing the joys of sketching outside. It's a session where there are no expectations - just the opportunity to sketch as part of a group and receive help and advice from myself and from each other.
We will meet at an agreed location and then walk together to find a suitable spot to stop and sketch.  At the first sketch stop (yes there will be a few) I will demonstrate the way I tackle a sketch giving you some pointers and hopefully making you feel at ease.  We will then as a group sketch together (yes even me!) and I will be available to answer any questions and give advice.

What is the price?
As an introductory bonus I'm running these sessions free of charge.

What happens after I book?
After messaging me to say you're coming I'll send you an email with information confirming the Sketch & Explore session details and a reminder about what to bring.

What do I need to bring?
My Top 10 sketchbook tips which covers the basics but I will bring:
  • a hardback sketchbook - a softback one is fine but you'll need something to lean on. Size of sketchbook doesn't matter though I tend to keep it small (A5 max) as it's less to carry. Bull dog clip/pegs to hold pages in position.
  • a waterbrush, aquarelle pencil and/or soluble graphite stick, some water soluble colour eg. inktense blocks/watercolour pencils/Neocrayons, pencil sharpener, berol felt pen and a few sheets of kitchen roll.
  • bottle of water - to top up your waterbrush (and to drink)
  • Something to sit on (as there are not necessarily any benches) - I bring something waterproof to sit on eg a coat, plastic bag. If you want to bring a fold up chair then bear in mind you'll have to carry it and there may not be a suitable space to put it up.
  • A flask of coffee.

Will there be parking / toilets / a café?
Facilities will depend upon the location - please see the session information. You will be responsible for your own parking costs.
Refreshment wise – I’ll generally be bringing a flask with me but some locations will have a café where we may be able to grab a cuppa afterwards. You will pay for your own refreshments.

How long is the session?
The length of session will vary but will be in the region of 2 hours.

How long will each sketch stop be?
This is difficult to say exactly but I would imagine anything from 5-10 mins up to 20 mins. We're not trying to create polished finished sketches - we're just trying to capture a memory of a place much like a visual diary. I'll share techniques I use to do just that.

Will the session always be in the same place?
No - I intend varying it up a bit. I'm keeping local for the first 2 sessions but if these go well I have plans to run sessions wherever I am in the UK.

How far are we walking?
Generally I’ll be aiming to walk for about an hour with breaks when we find that perfect place to sketch. If you find the going too difficult you are welcome to join for only part of the session.

What should I wear?
Wear clothing suitable for the weather  eg waterproofs if it is damp, sun hat when sunny (and suncream) and footwear needs to be suitable for grassy/rough terrain. No high heels required!

What if the weather is bad?
I will keep an eye on the weather and let you know if the session needs to be cancelled. Generally unless there is extreme weather, the session will still be on - we just need to dress and prepare for it.

Can I bring a dog?
No

Do I need to sketch?
Yes this is a Sketch & Explore session - it is not a walking group.
